Not every flower fakes equally well
It comes down to surface. Thick, waxy petals copy almost perfectly. Fine, translucent ones are still the hardest thing in the craft.
Convincing by nature
Orchids, lilies and monstera have thick, sculptural surfaces with a natural sheen. The living versions already read as slightly unreal, so a well-made copy sits comfortably in the same range. These hold up at eye level, on a hall table or a mantel, where people pass within arm’s reach.
Won or lost on the petal
Roses are the same flower at every price, and the difference is entirely in the making. A considered bloom carries dozens of distinct petals, the outermost curled back and a shade darker at the edge, over a proper calyx. A cheap one repeats a handful of identical stamped shapes on a plastic collar.
Still genuinely difficult
Daisies and cosmos have fine, papery petals that glow when light passes through them. No fabric quite reproduces that, so backlighting is where they give themselves away. Place them against a wall rather than a window, or let them do the filling while a stronger flower leads.
Where realism isn’t the point
Nobody examines a grass plume for authenticity. Ferns, pampas and dried grasses are carried entirely by texture, movement and silhouette, which copy faithfully. They are the safest thing to buy unseen, and they hold a room through winter when nothing else is in season.
What each one is for
Realism decides whether a stem convinces. Shape decides where it belongs.
- RosesA face for the front of an arrangement. Three heads carry a narrow vessel on their own.
- OrchidsHeight with almost no width. One arching stem in a tall vase is the whole display.
- Agave & SucculentsSmall, potted, unfussy. Shelves, windowsills and desks where a vase would be in the way.
- FernsGreen mass without flowers. Fills a corner or softens a hard shelf edge.
- MonsteraSingle large leaves used as shape rather than foliage. Strong against a plain wall.
- DaisiesSmall heads that fill the gaps between larger blooms. Rarely the focal point.
- Pampas & GrassesTexture and movement, no colour. Holds a room through winter when nothing is in season.
- Moss & TerrariumA base layer. Covers soil, fills a bowl, sits under a small potted display.
