Getting the size wrong is the commonest mistake in this category. Heights are approximate, but the constraint each surface imposes is not.

  • The basin surroundabout 85cm

    Wet, crowded and wiped down constantly. Small, sealed and easy to lift — anything with a fabric base will wick water.

  • The cisternabout 75cm

    A narrow ledge that takes one piece and nothing more. Small, and heavy enough at the base not to be knocked off.

  • The wall shelfabout 140cm

    Above eye level, so only the underside is really seen. Trailing pieces earn their place here more than anywhere else in the house.

  • The windowsillabout 100cm

    Usually frosted glass, which means diffuse light rather than direct sun. Kinder to faux pieces than a clear window in any other room.
