What to look for in orchids

  • The lip at the centre

    The labellum is the most structurally complex part of the flower, and the first thing a cheap orchid simplifies. Look for a throat with real depth and markings that follow the form, not a flat patch printed onto a moulded shape.

  • The curve of the stem

    A real spray arches under the weight of its own blooms, and the flowers sit at uneven intervals along it. A straight wire stem carrying evenly spaced heads is the fastest tell at any price.

  • Sheen rather than shine

    Orchid petals are waxy, so they hold a soft, diffuse sheen. A hard reflection under a lamp means the surface coating is wrong — and orchids are usually placed exactly where a lamp will catch them.
