What to look for in dried-look stems

  • Buy several of one thing

This is the mistake almost everyone makes here. One plume, one grass and one seed head in the same vase reads as a sample box. Three or five of a single stem reads as intentional. Work out the shape you want first, then buy the quantity that makes it, rather than one of everything that looks nice.

  • Texture is doing the work colour usually does

There is very little colour in this category, so what separates a good stem from a poor one is surface. A grass should catch light differently along its length, a seed head should have depth you can see into rather than a printed pattern, a papery petal should look brittle. Zoom in until one stem fills the frame — anything that stays flat at that distance will stay flat on a shelf.

  • The stem is part of the look

Unlike a flower stem that disappears into a vase, dried-look stems are usually displayed long and often bare for most of their length. That means the stalk itself has to be convincing: slightly uneven in colour, matte rather than shiny, and stiff enough to stand without leaning on the vase rim. Check the listing shows the full length rather than cropping to the head.
