What to look for in moss and landscape pieces

  • Count the colours

    Moss is never one green. Look closely at a good piece and you will find several greens, some grey and a fair amount of brown, because that is what moss does in life. A mat dyed to a single bright green is the giveaway, and it is the reason so many potted displays look convincing until you get to the soil.

  • Match the form to the job

    Flat mat is for covering the top of a pot cleanly. Loose, mounded moss is for filling a bowl or breaking up a hard edge. A sheet with a backing holds a shape on a wall or a frame. They are priced differently and they are not substitutes, so work out what you are covering before you choose.

  • Order enough to cover properly

    This is finishing material rather than a product in itself, and it is almost always ordered short. Its whole job is hiding the mechanics — the foam, the wire, the bare stem ends — and a thin, patchy layer draws attention to exactly what it was meant to cover. Measure the surface, then allow for the edges.
