Choosing well
What to look for in agave & succulents
Thickness, not outline
A succulent is defined by how fleshy the leaf is. Thin, flat leaves cut into a succulent shape fool nobody at close range, and these are plants people put within reach — on a desk, a shelf, a windowsill.
The bloom on the surface
Many species carry a powdery, matte film across the leaf. A glossy finish is simply the wrong surface for the plant, and it is the reason cheap succulents look like sweets.
Potted or unpotted
Unpotted pieces have a stake underneath and can be arranged into a vessel of your own. Potted ones are fixed. Neither is better — they solve different problems, and the listing should say which it is.
