Choosing well

What to look for in a bridal bouquet

  • Weight, and where it sits in the hand

This is the only thing here that gets carried for hours, and a bouquet that photographs beautifully can still be tiring to hold. Weight matters less than where it sits: a bound handle that is too thick to close a hand around, or a head that pulls forward because everything heavy is at the front, will be noticed by the afternoon. Look for a handle you could hold at the bottom rather than the middle.

  • Order it early and see it in daylight

The advantage of faux over fresh is that it exists months ahead, which is only useful if you actually use the time. Order early enough to hold it, walk with it, and look at it outdoors — indoor lighting shifts whites towards cream and pinks towards peach, and the dress is the one thing it has to sit against. If a shade is wrong you then have months to change it rather than a morning.

  • It is still there on Monday

A fresh bouquet is finished by the end of the day and pressing or drying it changes it into something else. This one comes home intact, which is worth planning for rather than discovering. Some people keep it, some sell it on, and either way it is part of what you are paying for — so it is worth choosing something you would be content to see in the house afterwards.
