On this kind of fern the stem is half the plant. It runs almost black and no thicker than wire, branching again and again, and because it is so fine you see through the frond rather than at it \u2014 the leaflets read as though they are floating. Most artificial versions use a thick green plastic rod down the middle, and the moment you add that, the delicacy is gone. Here the stems are genuinely thin, dark, and slightly glossy, with the leaflets attached on even finer side wires.<\/p>\n
The leaflets are small and toothed around the edge, each one set at its own slight angle rather than pressed flat into one plane, with a faint pebbled texture across the surface. The green is not uniform: fresh yellow-green at the newest tips, deeper olive through the body, and a dusty pale cast on some of the older leaves.<\/p>\n
Because the wire is fine, the whole stem has spring in it. Brush past and the frond moves and settles back, which is the thing that most reliably separates a good artificial fern from a stiff one at close range.<\/p>\n
It works as a filler rather than a feature \u2014 threaded through heavier flowers to soften the outline, or three or five stems on their own in a plain glass vase where the stem structure is part of what you are looking at. Indoor use only.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
