A thistle head is not a ball. It is dozens of stiff bracts pushing out in every direction from a tight centre, each one narrowing to its own point, and the gaps between them are as much a part of the shape as the spikes themselves. Almost every artificial version is a flocked foam sphere with a fuzzy surface \u2014 round, soft, and wrong. On these the spikes are separate and individually tapered, so the head catches light in a hundred small points and reads as prickly from across a room.<\/p>\n
The green colourway carries a second detail worth having: the spikes shade from a deep olive at the base to a pale yellow-green at the tips, which is what a real seed head does as it dries from the outside in. The chocolate version is the same head taken all the way over \u2014 matt, deep brown, with the wiry stems darkened to match.<\/p>\n
Five heads sit on thin branching side stems at different heights, with fine needle-like foliage threaded between them. This is a texture stem rather than a flower: it is what you add when an arrangement has enough colour but everything in it is soft and round. Three or five stems break up a mass of roses, hydrangea or peonies and give the eye something sharp to land on.<\/p>\n
