A large-flowered clematis has a pale bar running the full length of every petal \u2014 lighter down the middle, deepening towards the margins, with fine ribbing that catches light like grosgrain. It is the single most recognisable thing about the flower, and it is the first thing to disappear when a fake is printed in one flat tone. On these, the bar is shaded rather than stamped, so it fades into the darker edge instead of stopping at a hard line, and every petal is slightly different.<\/p>\n
The centre is a proper boss of stamens: a dozen or so fine white filaments radiating out with small brown anthers on the tips, standing clear of the petal base rather than sitting flat against it. The petals themselves are pointed and very slightly twisted, with an inner ring set behind the outer one \u2014 this is the doubled form, not the plain six-petal shape most artificial clematis copy.<\/p>\n
At 14 cm across, three blooms on one stem is enough. The leaves are deliberately sparse and narrow, and roughly the lower half of the stem is bare, which is what lets several stems sit together in a vase without the base turning into a thicket. It needs height \u2014 a tall vase, a floor vase, or a narrow bottle where a single stem can arch out on its own.<\/p>\n
