A cosmos petal is not a simple oval. It is broad at the tip and notched \u2014 three shallow teeth cut into the outer edge \u2014 and it is thin enough that light comes through it, with fine veins running out from the base like the ribs of a fan. Flat, opaque, smooth-edged petals are what make most artificial daisies look stamped out of a sheet. These have the notches, the veining is printed to radiate rather than sit as a flat wash, and the fabric is light enough to glow slightly with a window behind it.<\/p>\n
The centre is the other half of it: a domed pompom of tiny yellow-green florets, textured all over, sitting proud of the petal ring rather than flush with it. Three blooms sit on separate branching side stems at different heights, each one fully open, above the fine thread-like foliage that cosmos actually grows.<\/p>\n
The blooms are 11 cm \u2014 roughly twice the size of a real cosmos. That is deliberate. At normal scale a cosmos disappears into a vase; scaled up, a single stem holds its own next to heavier flowers, and three stems in a plain jug do the work of a whole bunch.<\/p>\n
Two of the eight colourways are blue, which no cosmos in the world produces. If you want the honest garden version, the white, blush and lilac are the ones to pick. If you want the colour, take the blues \u2014 they read as a designed choice rather than a mistake, and they sit beautifully against dark wood and painted walls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
