The centre is the whole flower. A scabious has a domed cushion of tiny individual florets at its middle, each one a separate bobble with a pale filament standing out of it \u2014 that is why it is called a pincushion flower. Artificial versions almost always replace it with a flat green disc or a single fuzzy ball, and the flower dies on the spot. On these the cushion is built from separate raised florets, packed tight and slightly uneven across the dome, in an acid lime-green that lifts every one of the five colourways.<\/p>\n
The petals are layered the way the real flower grows: a wide outer ring of large, notched, slightly cupped petals, then a tighter inner collar of smaller ones tipping in towards the centre. They are crimped rather than cut flat, so the edges catch light unevenly instead of reading as one smooth disc. The two buds are proper buds \u2014 closed green cushions with the colour just breaking at the edges \u2014 not smaller copies of the open flower.<\/p>\n
The foliage is the fine, dill-like feathering that grows on the real stem, and it is what makes this work as a filler. Three or five stems threaded through heavier flowers \u2014 roses, peonies, anything with a solid head \u2014 break up the mass and stop an arrangement looking blocky. On their own, seven or more in a plain glass jug give you a loose meadow shape.<\/p>\n
The stem is slim and bends without kinking, so you can angle the heads outwards rather than having them all face front. Trim to length with scissors; no water, no dropping petals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
