A cosmos petal is barely there \u2014 thin enough to see light through, with fine ribbing running its length and a squared-off, slightly notched tip rather than a rounded one. Fakes usually get the shape right and the substance wrong, cutting it from thick shiny satin that hangs stiff. These are cut from a fine matte fabric with the veining printed the whole way down each petal, so the colour deepens toward the centre exactly where a real one does.<\/p>\n
The centre is the other giveaway. Instead of a flat yellow disc, this one is built as a raised granular boss with a green base ring showing through, which is what a cosmos looks like before the pollen ring opens out.<\/p>\n
The foliage does as much work as the flowers. Cosmos leaves are threadlike, almost dill-like, and they’re reproduced here as fine soft fronds rather than the generic pointed leaves most stems get lumbered with. Four blooms sit at staggered heights with a couple of tight buds among them, and the wired stem bends so you can splay the heads apart.<\/p>\n
Five to seven stems fill a jug properly; a single stem works in a bud vase or slipped into a mixed arrangement. Trims cleanly with secateurs, needs no water, and reads as high summer all year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
