A protea is a difficult thing to fake because it is not really a flower \u2014 the pink you are looking at is a ring of bracts, stiff and papery, each one a separate blade with a dry edge and a slightly different length. Get them uniform and it turns into a plastic pine cone.<\/p>\n
These are built one bract at a time, chalked back so the colour sits matt rather than glossy, and shaded from a pale base to a deeper tip. The two leaves are the part most people miss: they are not green, they are going over \u2014 silvered, foxed with brown, curling at the edge the way real protea foliage does once it has dried. The stem is bare, woody and dusted pale, with the leaf joints left visible.<\/p>\n
At 64cm with a head the length of your palm, one stem carries a corner on its own; six in a tall vase and you have the whole arrangement.<\/p>\n
