The Iceland poppy is the hardest flower to fake, and one of the hardest to keep. Cut, it gives you a few days at best, and only if the stems are seared the moment they leave the plant \u2014 which is why you see this flower in photographs far more often than in anyone’s house.<\/p>\n
Its petal is tissue-thin and creased like paper that has been folded and opened again, and it glows when light passes through it rather than stopping the light dead. Most artificial poppies come out as flat plastic saucers. These are cut from crepe-textured fabric, creased by hand, and shaded from a pale throat out to a saturated rim, with a dark-flecked centre and fine hairs left standing on the stem.<\/p>\n
One stem carries two open blooms, a tight bud and a spray of fine fern, so a single stem already reads as an arrangement. The wire runs the full length, so you can bend the neck into that characteristic poppy nod.<\/p>\n
At 40cm it is a short stem, made for close quarters \u2014 a bud vase on a bedside table, a bathroom shelf, a desk. Three or five together fill a low bowl. For a tall jug you would want something longer.<\/p>\n
